About the Human Rights Tracker

Methodology

The Human Rights Tracker is based on a four-phased design that seeks to ensure the credibility and verifiability in documented incidents. This hybrid approach facilitates data completeness and quality assurance with narrow margins of error.

Methodology Phase
Phase 1
In the first phase, information is sourced from primary sources (Chapter Four activities); open information sources such as news reports and human rights publications of state and non-state actors; and reports received from the public through this website to identify potential incidents of violations.

Phase 2
The second phase involves broad but standardized analysis of documented incidents of violations. Project researchers review credibility of the reports in an effort to ensure quality and credibility of the information documented.

Phase 3
In the third phase, where necessary, project researchers contact the victims or survivors of the human rights violation or their families to collect any further pieces of information. This may involve fact-finding missions.

Phase 4
In the fourth phase, project researchers seek external / multiple sources of information about a particular incident to avoid single source data. This is particularly critical for information received from secondary sources.
